A couple years ago I met an economist at my university who plays WoW. He’s in a guild of economists and sociologists and political scientists from places like Princeton and Stanford and UT-Austin who study WoW and other MMOs where complex social interactions are possible. They also play the game fo’ realz. I’m sure they suck, but this is beside the point.
And yes, there are people who get paid to do that.
Anyway, the economist and I had been talking about capitals, and he said it had been a surprise to Blizzard that Ironforge was the center of the Alliance universe for most of Vanilla. They’d thought Stormwind would be people’s preferred hearth spot.
He said this interested him, when devs set up something for people one way, and people use the game in a completely different way than they expected.
There were obvious reasons Ironforge made a better hearth spot — reasons that didn’t occur to Blizzard devs, apparently. For one, IF was more central to a continent that had important instances and raids, like the ones in Blackrock Mountain, the “hard” level 60 instances up in the Plaguelands. IF also made for a shorter trip to Kalimdor, in particular Theramore, which was the Alliance’s launch point for Onyxia, Gadgetzan, SIlithus, DIre Maul, and Un’Goro.
It was also a convenient city with the inn, bank, and AH located in one area, with a nice big plaza between the bank and AH, where asshole peacocks could strut around in Paladin Banana Shoulders going, “Look at me! My healing set gives me +strength.”
Our economist also told me that Blizzard devs said there are probably too many capitals now, and although they’re proud of Silvermoon (yes) and Exodar (why?), they have some regrets about having built full-fledged cities. The devs had wanted all the capitals, including Thunder Bluff and Darnassus, to have some people in them at all times. Good luck, right? The only way that will happen is if the devs add more things to do and see in every capital or, in other words, give people unique reasons to be in each one.
Add to Blizzard devs’ not-foreseen pile the fact that Shatt, then Dalaran, have often been used as hearth spots for low-level characters, which had the consequence of hurting all the Old World capitals’ populations. So what does it mean that portals to capitals are being removed from the Outland and Northrend capitals of Shattrath and Dalaran, to put an end to something that always felt like a bit of a cheat?
It’s hard to say, honestly. We don’t know whether Blizzard is going to provide alternatives to level 68-80 players for getting back to the Old World, or whether those players will be expected to fly to Borean or Fjord or to Hellfire, for that matter, to visit Org, SW, and IF.
One of the people I follow said that if ports are to be removed, then Shatt and Dal should get auction houses, so players leveling in Storm Peaks or Icecrown don’t have to spend 20-30 minutes getting to a capital to sell shit. I agree with this completely. And I expect that if Blizzard won’t be providing transportation alternatives in Shatt in Dal, that they will provide faction-specific auctioneers in the Sunreavers and Silver Covenant areas in Dal, as well as Horde and Alliance auctioneers in Shatt’s Lower City.
I mean, that would just be reasonable. Can you imagine having to fly from Shatt to the Dark Portal, ride to Nethergarde or Stonard, then fly to Stormwind if you’re Alliance, or — worse, if you’re Horde — all the way to Undercity from Stonard, or to Grom’Gol to the Zepp stand, take the Zepp to Orgrimmar or Undercity, then ride into town? That would be fucking horrible. Too horrible, in fact, for Blizzard to do.
In short: Expect more to this story.
